Beloit, Wis. – The Women’s Basketball Team ended the year on a high note with a clutch performance at Flood Arena on Saturday, as they came back from an early deficit to triumph over the Spartans of Manchester University 69-64 in overtime.
After falling behind 19-10 in the first, the Bucs clawed their way back into the game behind a strong defensive effort from the home team. #22 Melissa McClean (’18 Woodridge, Ill.) tied the game back up late in the 2nd quarter before a Spartans basket made the score 29-31 at halftime.
The senior forward finished the game with an impressive double-double, as she contributed 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Bucs as a team outrebounded the Spartans 46-27.
The second half continued to be tightly contested by both teams in a game that saw 12 lead changes and 7 ties throughout. Back-to-Back 3-pointers by #10 Danielle Strejc (’20 Evanston, Ill.) stretched the Bucs lead to 5 (51-46) with 5:06 remaining in the contest, but the Spartans battled back to take the lead (52-54) with 44 seconds remaining. Junior Shelby Kline (’19 Rockton, Ill.) came up big in the final seconds, however, tying the game with 8 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Strejc and Kline hit a pair of shots from beyond the arc early, and the Bucs never looked back after taking the lead for good (59-57) 1 minute into overtime.
The Bucs (3-9) are off until 2018. They return to action in De Pere, Wisconsin on January 3rd to face off against St. Norbert College.
