Beloit, WI - Thanksgiving break proved to be a much needed respite for the Women’s Basketball team, as they returned to action at home with a resounding 76-53 win against the Rockford University Regents Wednesday night at Flood Arena to end an early season skid.
The Bucs continuously broke through an aggressive press from the Regents en route to posting their best scoring output of the season. In addition to shooting a blistering 55% from the field as a team (33-60), Melissa McLean (’18 Woodridge, IL) and Danielle Strejc (’20 Evanston, IL) contributed career bests of 24 and 16 points, respectively.
It was raining three’s early for the Bucs in the aptly named Flood Arena, as the team drained 5 shots from downtown before the half. Lauren Glaser (’20, Iverness, IL) was a menace on both ends of the floor in the first quarter, collecting 3 steals and swishing 2 shots from beyond the arc in the opening frame, as the Bucs jumped out to an early 20-13 lead.
Though the Regents were able to generate 13 turnovers in the first half, the Bucs offensive effort was simply too much to handle, as the lead ballooned to 19 before settling down to a 40-26 advantage for Beloit at the half.
Both teams came out of the break ready to compete, and a strong offensive push by the Regents cut the lead to 12 before the Bucs responded with two impressive scoring runs. Rockford continued to create opportunities with 26 caused turnovers to keep the game close throughout the third and fourth quarters.
The Bucs (1-4; 1-2) will look to continue their success when they host Grinnell College (3-2; 0-0) Friday night in Flood Arena with tip-off slated for 7:30pm.
