Mt. Vernon, IA -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team dropped a 68-44 decision at Midwest Conference-leader Cornell College 68-44 Wednesday night.
The Rams took charge early, getting out to a 16-6 lead at the 3:57 mark of the opening quarter. The Bucs cut the deficit to five twice, the last time at 19-14 with under a minute left, before Cornell hit a jumper and two free throws to lead 23-14 after one. CC had an 11-4 advantage in the second quarter on the way to a 34-18 lead at halftime.
Beloit got back within 40-28 two-plus minutes into the third quarter before Cornell closed the last 7:29 of the period on a 17-3 run to lead 57-31 heading to the fourth. The Buccaneers could get no closer than 21 in the fourth period.
The Bucs shot 40.4% (19-47) for the game to Cornell's 39.7% (23-58), out-rebounded the Rams 34-33, and had 16 assists to CC's 15 but Beloit committed 28 turnovers, 21 on steals by Cornell.
Melissa McLean scored a career-best 14 points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and had three steals while Kelsey Horvath had 10 points. Julia Moll had four assists and also added three steals.
Beloit returns to Flood Arena on Saturday after to host Lawrence University in a 1:00 p.m. tip.
