Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team got off to a hot start against Ripon College on Wednesday night but went ice-cold in the second quarter on the way to a 65-55 Midwest Conference loss in the team's first game in Flood Arena since November 19.
The Bucs jumped on top 11-3 in the first four-plus minutes of the game but the Red Hawks responded with a 10-0 run to take a two-point lead with under a minute left. Jaylan Dunn's layin with 35 seconds left tied the game at 13-all after one. Ripon took the lead for good 40 seconds into the second quarter. Beloit stayed within striking distance until RC went on a 12-2 run that took them from a four-point lead to a 14-point spread with 1:14 left in the half. The Buccaneers made just two free throws during the run. The Red Hawks led 33-19 at the break after shooting 53.8% (7-13) in the second while holding Beloit to 14.3% (1-7).
The deficit grew as high as 18 points early in the third quarter but a 14-2 Buccaneer run cut it to six with just over a minute left. Ripon led 45-37 thru three. RC re-established control in the fourth quarter, pushing their lead back into double digits for most of the period. Beloit did get the game back within seven points with 34 seconds remaining with an 11-2 run before the Red Hawks closed out the 10-point win.
The Bucs finished at 40.4% shooting (19-47) from the field while Ripon shot 45.1% (23-51).
Nora Polaski had a game-high 15 points with six rebounds while Laura Panicali scored 13 and Shelby Kline 11.
Beloit steps away from MWC play for their next two games, beginning on Saturday, December 17, against Loras College. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
