Monmouth, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team had opportunties in both games but dropped a pair of Midwest Conference road games over the weekend, falling at Monmouth College 65-60 on Saturday afternoon after a 51-36 loss at Grinnell College on Friday night.
Saturday, the Bucs trailed 12-10 after the opening quarter but shot 66.7% (8-12) in the second quarter to take a 29-26 lead into halftime. The Fighting Scots turned it around with 58% (7-12) shooting in the third quarter while holding Beloit to 36.4% (4-11) to take a 43-41 lead into the fourth period. A 13-4 MC run in the first five-plus minutes of the fourth gave Monmouth some breathing room and the Buccaneers could get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Laura Panicali had 19 points and Nora Polaski 12 in the game. Polaski and Tegan Rock both grabbed seven rebounds while Kelsey Horvath had four assists.
Back on Friday night it was a big first quarter by Grinnell that put the Buccaneers in a 12-4 hole early. Beloit shot just 16.7% (2-12) in the opening 10 minutes. The Bucs got back with five with a 6-3 run to open the second quarter but trailed 28-17 at the break after the Pioneers answered the BC run with a 9-2 spurt. The teams played even in the third quarter and the Buccaneers never got closer than seven points in the final 10 minutes, despite shooting 54.5% (6-11).
Polaski was the lone Buccaneer in double figures with 12 points. Rock grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Beloit looks to turn things around on Wednesday night in Flood Arena as they begin an extended four-game homestand against Ripon College. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
