Lake Forest, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team went cold in the third quarter and then saw Lake Forest got hot in the fourth in a 66-54 loss to open Midwest Conference play on Tuesday night.
The Bucs jumped out to a 10-point 16-6 lead in the opening quarter on the strength of 58.3% (7-12) shooting, plus a pair of three-pointers. The Foresters went on an 11-1 run in the first five-plus minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at 17-all, before Beloit scored seven of the last nine points in the half to lead 28-26 at the break.
LFC broke out of a 30-30 tie early in the third quarter with a 5-0 run over the next three minutes to grab the lead for good, ending the quarter with a 40-36 advantage. The Buccaneers pulled to within 41-40 a minute into the fourth quarter and were still within 45-42 with seven minutes remaining before an 11-0 Lake Forest run decided the contest, keeping the deficit in double figures the rest of the way.
The Bucs finished at 43.8% (21-48) for the game. The Foresters, who shot 64.7% (11-17) in the fourth quarter, shot 42.9% (27-63) for the game. Beloit won the rebound battle 37-33.
Kelsey Horvath's 15 points, on 7-9 shooting, led the way for the Buccaneers while she also grabbed six rebounds. Jaylan Dunn tied her career high with 10 points and shared team rebounding honors with Tegan Rock, both with seven. Rock added eight points and Laura Panicali seven.
Beloit has a week off before traveling just across the state line to Rockford University next Tuesday. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
