Appleton, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team grabbed the lead 28 seconds into the game and gradually built it as they defeated Lawrence University 68-49 Tuesday night.
Lana Wieseman hit a three-pointer at the 9:32 mark of the opening quarter for the game's first points and the Buccaneers never looked back. They pushed the lead to 13-6 on a three-pointer by Alyssa Capecci with 2:30 left before the Vikings closed the quarter with five straight points to make it 13-11 after one. A 13-2 Beloit run in the second period gave the Bucs a 28-14 advantage with just over four minutes left in the half as they increased their lead to 36-21 at the break.
Beloit built their advantage as high as 19 in the third quarter but Lawrence kept hanging around as the Buccaneers led 51-37 heading to the fourth. An 11-2 run to open the final period made it a 62-41 lead midway thru and LU never got closer than 18 the rest of the way.
The Buccaneers shot just 41.1% (23-56) for the game but held the Vikings to 24.2% (15-62) shooting. They also won the rebound battle 44-34 and made six three-pointers to LU's one.
Wieseman led the Bucs with 17 points, eclipsing 1,600 career points, and nine rebounds while Nora Polaski had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Laura Panicali added 10 points and four assists.
Beloit travels to Monmouth College on Saturday for their final road contest of the season. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
