Late Grinnell Spurt Leads to Bucs Falling Short on Senior Day

January 23, 2016

Beloit, WI -- A late spurt by Grinnell College sent the Beloit College Women's Basketball team to a 65-61 loss on Senior Day in Flood Arena Saturday.

Seniors Alyssa Capecci, Megan McCabe and Lana Wieseman were honored in post-game ceremonies.

The teams played close basketball thru the opening quarter and into the second until Grinnell scored the last seven points of the half for a 34-27 lead at the break.

A 6-2 Pioneer run out of the lockerroom gave them their biggest lead at 40-29 in the third period.  They still led by 11 with six minutes left but the Bucs chipped away and a McCabe layup with 19 seconds left made it 46-41, GC, at the end of three.  Beloit kept up their mini-run into the fourth quarter and grabbed a 47-46 lead at the 7:40 mark on a jumper by Wieseman.  From that point to the end there were three ties and it was still a one-point game with 1:18 remaining.  But the Pioneers hit four free throws in the final 19 seconds to hold off the Buccaneers, who were scoreless down the stretch before McCabe made a pair of free throws with less than a second left for the final score.

Beloit shot 54.2% (13-24) in the second half to finish at 50% for the game from the field.  They held Grinnell to 38.2% shooting (21-55) for the game but committed 26 turnovers.

Wieseman finished with a team-high 13 points before fouling out with 1:29 remaining while Nora Polaski had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists before also fouling out midway thru the fourth period.  Laura Panicali added 10 points and Shelby Kline grabbed a career-best eight rebounds.

Beloit looks to turn things around on Tuesday night when they travel to Carroll University for a 7:30 p.m. Midwest Conference game.
