Wieseman Sets All-Time Scoring Mark; Bucs Come Up Short at IC

January 16, 2016

Jacksonville, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team witnessed a new all-time scoring leader being crowned, but the celebration was muted as Illinois College rallied in the final minute-plus for a 62-58 win on Saturday.

Lana Wieseman provided the big highlight of the game in the second quarter, hitting a three-pointer at the 4:35 mark of the period that not only tied the score at 26-all and sparked a 10-0 run, but also put her name atop the scoring list in Buccaneer Women's Basketball program history, topping Stacy Schmidt (1988-92) with her 1,463rd  point.  Wieseman entered the 2015-16 season with 1,164 points and passed six former Buccaneer standouts to achieve the all-time mark.

Beloit broke away from a 33-33 halftime tie with a 10-3 run out of the lockerroom to take a 43-36 lead just under four minutes into the period.  But IC answered with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to retake the lead with 2:06 left in the quarter.  A Wieseman layup with 41 seconds left gave Beloit a 51-49 advantage heading to the fourth period.

The Buccaneers built that two-point lead up to six with 7:29 left but the Lady Blues rallied with a 6-0 run to tie it at 55 with 2:59 remaining.  Laura Panicali hit a three-pointer at the 1:49 mark to make it a three-point lead for Beloit with just over two minutes left.  But that would be the Bucs' final points as IC closed with a 7-0 run for the victory.

Beloit finished at 39.3% shooting (24-61) for the game after hitting just 10 of 31 second-half shots (32.3%).  Illinois College finished at 44.6% (25-56).  26 turnovers, 14 on steals, also hurt Beloit, though they held a 39-32 advantage in rebounds.

Wieseman finished with 32 points, her sixth career game with 30-plus, while hitting four three-pointers and grabbing 17 rebounds, tying the fifth-highest total in Beloit Women's history.  Panicali scored 11, hitting three three-pointers.

Beloit will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night at Lake Forest College, with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
