Sixth-Ranked Hope Sprints Past Cold-Shooting Bucs

December 30, 2015

Orlando, FL -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team got a close-up look at a top-10 squad in their final game at the RDV Sportsplex Classic Wednesday, falling to #6 Hope College 72-33.

The setback was the worst for Beloit since a 98-52 loss at Depauw University of Indiana on November 30, 2002.

The Buccaneers stayed close through the first quarter, hitting a pair of three-pointers, and trailed 20-12 at the end of the opening 10 minutes.  But the Flying Dutch took control in the second period, out-scoring the Bucs 21-5, with Beloit going just 2-14 from the field, on the way to a 41-17 halftime advantage.

HC kept the pressure on out of the lockerroom, forcing 13 third-quarter turnovers and holding the Buccaneers to four field goals on just seven shots for a 58-27 advantage after three periods.  Beloit never got closer than 28 points during the fourth quarter after a Kelsey Horvath three-pointer 21 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Bucs shot 26.5% (13-49) for the game while committing 36 turnovers.  Hope finished at 41.7% (30-72), 47.2% (17-36) in their dominating first half.

Lana Wieseman was the lone Buccaneer in double figures with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds as she continued to move toward Beloit's all-time career scoring mark.  She passed the 1,400-point plateau, just the second Buccaneer woman to eclipse that figure, and has 1,401 going into the new year.  The all-time mark is 1,462 points by Stacy Schmidt from 1988-92.

Wieseman was named to the Classic All-Tournament Team.

Beloit returns to Midwest Conference play on Wednesday, January 6, when they host Lake Forest College at Flood Arena.  Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
