Ripon, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team put together a fourth-quarter rally at Ripon College Tuesday night but fell short in a 71-68 Midwest Conference loss.
The opening quarter was close for the entire 10 minutes - with three ties and four lead changes - and ended with Ripon holding a slim 13-12 advantage. A 7-0 run by the Red Hawks put them up 24-18 at 6:16 of the second period but the Bucs battled back to within 28-26 with 3:50 left. RC closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 36-28 lead into the break.
A pair of Ripon three-pointers inside the first minute of the third quarter pushed RC's lead to its largest of the game at 42-28. The Buccaneers chipped away thru the rest of the period but still trailed 57-46 going to the fourth. Beloit trailed 59-48 at the 7:49 mark of the final quarter before putting together a 15-6 run to pull within 65-63 with three minutes remaining. But each team hit two free throws in the final minutes for the final score.
The Buccaneers did have the ball past half court out of a time out with seconds left but couldn't get a possible tying three-point shot off.
Beloit shot 42% (21-50) for the game while Ripon was at 45.2% (28-62), including 50% (14-28) in the second half.
Laura Panicali scored 25 points, including going 10-12 from the free throw line, to lead the Bucs while Lana Wieseman added 19 points before fouling out with 24 seconds left. Shelby Kline had 14 points, including a pair of three's. Nora Polaski grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Buccaneers have some time for finals before getting back in action next Wednesday when they host Cornell College in Flood Arena. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
