Buccaneers Stage 4th-Quarter Comeback but Fall Short at Grinnell

November 28, 2015

Grinnell, IA -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team didn't let a double-digit fourth quarter deficit keep them from continuing to work.  But their big comeback fell just short in an 82-78 loss at Grinnell College Saturday.

The Pioneers jumped out quickly in the opening period, racing to a 10-point lead just four minutes in.  By the end of the quarter they increased the advantage to 26-8.  After the deficit ballooned as high as 17 in the second period the Buccaneers got as close as seven with 33 seconds left in the half before trailing 42-33 at the break.

Grinnell got their lead back up to double-figures in the third quarter and held it for most of the 10 minutes, leading 62-50 after three.  GC still led by 15 just under two minutes into the final quarter before Beloit put together a 21-7 run over the next seven minutes to pull within one at 72-71 with 2:46 remaining.  The Bucs were still within one with 28 seconds left but GC hit a free throw and a layup in the final 26 seconds to seal the win.

The Buccaneers shot 43.5% (30-69) for the game while Grinnell was at 54.2% (26-48).

Laura Panicali had her second straight 20-point outing with 27 points, including hitting five three-pointers.  Lana Wieseman had 26 points and nine rebounds, going 8-11 from the field and 10-12 from the free throw line, while Nora Polaski added 10 rebounds to her nine points.

Beloit looks to start another winning streak Wednesday when they host Lawrence University at 7:00 p.m. in Flood Arena.
