Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team has plenty to be thankful for, mainly their home-court advantage, after Tuesday's 78-67 Midwest Conference-opening win over Carroll University in Flood Arena.
The Bucs' win snapped an 11-game Pioneer winning streak in the series. It was their first win over Carroll since January 9, 2010.
A close first period end with Laura Panicali's three-pointer just before the buzzer to give Beloit a 19-16 lead. That three spurred the Buccaneers, who held the lead for nearly the entire second quarter and headed to the lockerroom up 37-32 after a pair of Panicali free throws with six seconds left. Panicali had 13 first half points to lead all scorers.
Beloit didn't let up in the third quarter, putting together a 16-6 run after CU scored the first points of the period to move ahead 53-40 with 4:18 left. They held a 64-50 advantage as the quarter ended. The Buccaneers hit their biggest lead at 66-50 one minute into the fourth period and Carroll never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
The Bucs shot 51.9% (27-52) for the game, including 57.7% (15-26) in the third and fourth quarters. Carroll shot 42.6% (23-54) for the game.
Panicali finished with 24 points, including three three-pointers, to lead four Bucs in double figures. Lana Wieseman battled fouls and finished with 15 points while Shelby Kline and Nora Polaski each had 12 points, Polaski with a game-high nine rebounds.
Beloit hits the road Saturday for an MWC game at Grinnell College. Tipoff is at 3:00 p.m.
