Bucs Start Fast, Cruise Past Rockford in Home Opener

November 21, 2015

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team showed how excited they were for their home opener by topping Rockford University 84-49 in Flood Arena Saturday afternoon.

The 35-point margin of victory was the team's largest since they defeated Mount Mary University 93-21 on December 9, 2011.

Beloit got off to a 10-0 start in the first 1:40 of the first quarter, with Laura Panicali scoring eight points in the run, including a pair of three-pointers.  The lead reached 27-6 at 2:25 when Alyssa Capecci hit the second of back-to-back jumpers.  The Buccaneers led 34-13 after one.

The advantage reached 30 four minutes into the second quarter on a Lana Wieseman layin.  Beloit led 54-23 at the break.  They shot 53.7% (22-41) in the opening 20 minutes, including hitting five three-pointers, while holding the Regents to 8-24 shooting (33.3%).  Wieseman had 12, Panicali 10 and Capecci nine in the half.

The Bucs enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 3:55 of the third quarter on Mykenzie Larsen's layup and held a 70-36 advantage heading to the final quarter.

Beloit never led by less than 33 in the fourth period, three times getting the lead up to 41 again, before settling for the final score as head coach Jennifer McCormick  got plenty of playing time for every player.

The Buccaneers finished at 45.5% (35-77) for the game while Rockford finished at 35.4% (17-48).  Wieseman had 20 points to lead 11 players in the scoring column.  Her 20 points pushed her career total to 1,228, leap-frogging both Julie Wilkey and Kim Huisheere-Ciochon for fourth place on the all-time scoring list.  Panicali was the only other Buc in double figures with 14.  Melissa McLean led the team with six rebounds while Kelsey Horvath had tied her career-best with six assists.

Hailey Taylor and Madison Lombard, both with five points, recorded their first collegiate points in the game.

The Buccaneers now head into Midwest Conference play on Tuesday night when they host Carroll University.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
