Buccaneer Women's Basketball Can't Dig Out of Early Hole in Opener

November 13, 2015

Dubuque, IA -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team fell behind early and, despite several runs, could never quite get back to even in an 80-67 season-opening loss at Loras College Friday night.

The Duhawks scored the first 10 points of the game before Lana Wieseman hit a jumper at the 6:23 mark of the first quarter for the first Beloit score of the season.  The Bucs put together a 16-7 run after that 10-point deficit to pull back within one at 2:02 but LC closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to lead 27-20.

On the strength of a 9-4 run the Buccaneers pulled back to within four at 33-29 with 5:29 left in the half but, again, the Duhawks closed with a 14-2 run to lead 47-31 at the break.

Loras built their advantage to as high as 18 in the third quarter but Beloit kept chipping away, getting as close as 57-51 at 2:10, before LC ended the quarter up 64-54.

The Bucs were within five points at 64-59 a little over one minute into the fourth quarter but a 16-0 run by Loras put the game away.

Wieseman led Beloit with 23 points, 18 in the first half, and 10 rebounds, moving into sixth on the Buccaneer all-time scoring list, While Shelby Kline had 18 points in her first collegiate game, 12 on three-pointers, and Laura Panicali 16.

The Buccaneers hit 10 three-pointers, with Wieseman and Panicali each adding three, the second-most in a game in Beloit Women's Basketball history.  Overall Beloit shot 35.5% for the game (22-62) while Loras hit 39.5% (30-76).

Beloit has a little time to work on things before traveling to Concordia University on Wednesday night.  Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
