Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team responded to every challenge Carroll University put in front of them but in the end it wasn't enough in a 76-68 defeat in Flood Arena Tuesday night.
Carroll, just a game out of the MWC's top spot coming in, jumped out in front with a 21-10 run that gave them a 23-12 lead eight minutes into the game. The Buccaneers responded with a 16-5 run that tied the game at 28-all at the 5:14 mark. But CU closed the half with an 11-5 run to lead 43-37 at the break.
The first eight minutes of the second half was still anybody's game until the Pioneers broke a 52-52 tie with an 18-3 run that gave them their largest lead at 70-55 with just over five minutes remaining. Again, Beloit responded, this time with a 10-0 run that brought it down to a five-point deficit with 2:01 left. But Carroll outscored the Bucs 6-3 to finish the game for the win.
The Buccaneers battled through 34 turnovers by shooting 55% (22-40) from the field for the game, including 70.6% in the opening half. They were also 19-22 from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle 30-25. Carroll shot 50.9% (28-55) for the game, 54.8% in the first half, and had 19 turnovers.
Laura Panicali had a career game, scoring 31 points on 11-15 shooting from the floor, including 4-6 on three-pointers. The 31 points tied two former Bucs (Katie McCool in 2007, Julie Wilke in 2002) for the fourth-most points in a game.
Nora Polaski had 18 points, including going 12-14 from the free throw line, while Lana Wieseman scored 11 while battling foul trouble. Megan McCabe made five steals.
Beloit has a little time to get their legs back, not playing until next Wednesday when they travel to Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
