Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team never gave in but couldn't erase a double-figure deficit in a 73-65 loss to Lake Forest College in Flood Arena on Wednesday night.
Junior forward Lana Wieseman was the story despite the loss, hitting a layin at the 12:03 mark of the first half to join the Buccaneer Women's Basketball 1,000-Point Club. The 15th member, Wieseman is just the third player in program history to hit the milestone in her junior season, joining Kim Huisheere-Ciochon and Stacy Schmidt, who both scored their 1,000th point during the 1990-91 season. Counting Wednesday night she now has 1,016 points, good for 14th-place on the list.
Back to the game. The teams were tied at 4-4 just over two minutes in when the Foresters went on a 17-5 run to grab a 12-point lead at the 11:20 mark. The Buccaneers chipped away at the deficit and got it back down to 27-24 with 5:24 left before LFC closed the half on a 10-5 run to head to the lockerroom with a 37-29 advantage.
Lake Forest came out of the lockerrom flying and pushed their lead up to 53-36 at the 12:46 mark. But the Bucs again slowly chipped away, getting it to a 66-61 score with just over three minutes remaining. But the Foresters got back up by nine with 43 seconds left and held on.
Beloit shot just 32.1% (17-53) for the game but fueled their comeback effort from the free throw line, taking advantage of 30 LFC fouls to go 29-41 from the charity stripe. They also won the rebounding battle 47-40.
Wieseman led the way with another double-double, scoring 20 points while grabbing 18 rebounds. The 18 boards are the fourth-most in a game in program history. She also went 10-14 from the free throw line.
Nora Polaski had 15 points and eight rebounds while Laura Panicali added 10 points.
The Buccaneers look to snap their down run on Saturday afternoon at Grinnell College. Tip off is at 1:00 p.m.
