Milwaukee, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team closed out their 2016 season on a high note with a three-set win at Mount Mary University Saturday, taking the match 3-0.
Back on Friday night the Bucs extended St. Norbert College to five sets before falling 3-2 in the final Midwest Conference match of the season.
The Buccaneers 10 wins on the season marked their most since 2010.
Saturday, Beloit won 25-18, 25-19, 25-17. In the first set the Buccaneers closed with a 7-1 run after MMU had pulled to within a point. A 10-2 run midway thru the second set pushed the Bucs to within one of the match win and they closed it out in the third set, building a commanding lead and then holding off a late Blue Angels rally.
Amanda Baran had 11 kills to lead the attack while Paige Wimbrow made 23 set assists and added three aces. Abby Gessell made 28 digs to pace the defense.
Josie Lindsey Robbins, the lone senior on the team, played her final matches for Beloit.
Gessell finished with 446 digs, the sixth-most in a season for Beloit since 2008.
On Friday, SNC got the win 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 20-25, 15-8.
Beloit rallied from seven down in the first set but the Green Knights held on at the end. The Bucs closed with an 8-4 run to even the match in set two before St. Norbert scored 16 of the first 23 points to regain the lead in the third set. The Buccaneers forced a deciding fifth set with a 6-2 closing run in set four but SNC grabbed the lead early in the fifth set and never gave it up for the win.
Baran had 12 kills while Wimbrow made 26 assists. Baran also had three aces. Gessell made 21 digs and Molly Muller nine blocks, eight on block assists as the team recorded 10.0 total blocks.
