Grinnell, IA -- Abby Gessell, a sophomore outside hitter for the Beloit College Volleyball team from Sartell, Minnesota, has been named the first Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the 2016 season. The Conference office announced the honor on Wednesday afternoon.
Gessell played all 14 games to help lead the Bucs to a 3-1 record and a share of the Buc Blast Tournament's top record last weekend in Flood Arena. She made 70 digs, including 32 in a five-set win over Illinois Institute of Technology and also served three aces as Beloit recorded its best record in the history of the Buc Blast.
The Buccaneers, fresh off a 3-1 win over Alverno College Tuesday night in Flood, now hit the road for Rochester, New York, where they will compete at the University of Rochester Invite on Friday. They play The College of Brockport at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time followed by Utica College at 6:00 p.m.
