Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team fell twice over the weekend in Flood Arena, 3-1 Saturday to Grinnell College and 3-0 to MWC-leader Cornell College Friday night.
Grinnell took the match 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 while Cornell got the win 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.
Saturday Beloit jumped on top with a first-set win, scoring the final point after GC had pulled to within 24-23. In set two a 6-1 Grinnell run pushed the score from 15-11 to 21-12 as they held on to tie the match.
Grinnell scored eight of the final 12 points to break away from a 17-all tie in the third set. In the deciding set the Pioneers closed with a 7-2 run after trailing 20-18 to secure the match.
Taylor Lewis and Bethany Stavrakas both had 14 kills to lead the attack while Jaylan Dunn added 10. Abby Gessell had 17 assists and Breea Rogalla 16. Stavrakas five service aces, all in a row and tied for the fifth-most in a match since 2008, and Dunn had two. Josie Lindsey-Robbins had 29 digs, Stavrakas 19 and Shelby Strehlow 18.
On Friday night the Rams took set one with a 10-2 closing run after a 15-15 score. The Buccaneers closed to within 19-16 in the second set but, again, Cornell closed strong with a 6-2 run. In the final set the Bucs battled throughout and were tied 19-19 before CC scored six of the final seven points to take the match.
Dunn's seven kills led the attack while Gessell had eight assists. Lewis had two aces and Lindsey-Robbins 10 digs.
Beloit has the week off before heading to Lake Forest College next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Midwest Conference match.
