Volleyball: Bucs Keep Battling but Fall Twice in MWC Home Weekend

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team never quit battling but dropped a pair of Midwest Conference matches over the weekend at Flood Arena.

The Bucs fell to Lawrence University 3-0 on Saturday after dropping a 3-0 decision to St. Norbert College Friday night.

In Saturday's match, won by Lawrence 25-15, 25-16, 25-16, Beloit fell behind early but came back to make it a 16-13 score in the first set.  LU closed with a 9-2 run to take the set.  In set two the Buccaneers led early and were within 12-11 midway through only to see the Vikings put together a 13-5 spurt in the second half of the set for the win.  In the final set the Bucs were within 15-11 midway through but a 7-3 run by Lawrence increased the advantage as they grabbed the match.

Bethany Stavrakas, Taylor Lewis and Jaylan Dunn had six kills apiece while Cheyenne Moffatt had 11 assists and Breea Rogalla nine.  Stavrakas also had four aces and 11 digs.  Josie Lindsey-Robbins led the team with 18 digs.

On Friday St. Norbert won the match 25-17, 26-24, 25-18.  The Green Knights took charge of the first set early before Beloit battled back to within 14-11.  SNC then scored 11 of the final 17 points for the win.  The Bucs built a lead in the second set as high as seven points but St. Norbert closed with a 15-8 run to win the set.  In the deciding set it was 13-12 Green Knights midway through and still 19-16 late but St. Norbert scored four of the final five points to take the match.

Dunn had eight kills and four blocks while Abby Gessell had a pair of aces.  Stavrakas had 12 digs and Gessell 10.

The Buccaneers play at Rockford University Tuesday night before making the long trip to Illinois College on Friday night in a return to MWC play.
