Milwaukee, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team gave themselves a chance with a fourth-set win but dropped the deciding fifth set in a 3-2 season-opening loss at Alverno College Tuesday night.
Alverno took the match 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-12.
The Flames scored the last two points to take the first set before the Bucs tallied five of the final seven points to even the match in the second set. AC broke away from a 20-all tie in set three with five of the final seven points to move within one of the match win but Beloit dominated the fourth set, scoring 13 of the first 19 points, to force the deciding set. In the fifth set the Buccaneers held an 11-8 advantage but Alverno closed with a 7-1 run to take the match.
Taylor Lewis, Jaylan Dunn and Chrissie Clayton each had eight kills while Bethany Stavrakas had seven. Breea Rogalla had 19 set assists while Cheyenne Moffatt had 14. Dunn added eight service aces, the most in a match since Tess Jacquez had eight against MSOE on September 11, 2009. Josie Lindsey-Robbins recorded 11 digs.
The Buccaneers open their home season this weekend when they host the Buc Blast Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Flood Arena. Beloit plays Alverno to open the Tourney at 4:30 p.m. Friday and plays Illinois Institute of Technology at 6:30. Saturday the Bucs take on Rockford University at 10:00 a.m. and UW-Marathon County at 12:00 noon.
