Three Beloit College track and field athletes have received All-Academic honors from the Unites States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and the Buccaneer women’s squad has been recognized as an All-Academic Team.
To be eligible for All-Academic Team honors, a team must carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00. The USTFCCCA recognized 291 programs including 185 women’s teams with academic honors this year. The Buccaneers posted a cumulative GPA of 3.16 after the 2018 outdoor season.
The USTFCCCA takes athletic and academic accomplishments into consideration for the individual academic awards. Eligible student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher and met one of two athletic standards: competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship; or finished the regular season ranked in the national top-50 in an individual event or ranked in the national top-35 in a relay event on the official NCAA Descending Order List.
Two Buccaneer men were recognized on the list that included a total of 408 men from Division III including Scott Fuchs and Jose Gutierrez. Fuchs, a business economics major, finished the outdoor season ranked 39th nationally in the javelin. Gutierrez, an environmental studies major, became Beloit College’s second male track and field student-athlete to earn All-America honors with a seventh place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2018 NCAA III Outdoor Championships.
On the women’s side, the USTFCCCA recognized 627 women including Eva Laun-Smith. In her first year of collegiate track and field competition, Laun-Smith was ranked second in the nation in the triple jump heading into the outdoor championships. She has yet to declare a major.
