School Records Fall in Last Chance Qualifier

Jose Gutierrez and Eva Laun-Smith set new program marks in a last chance qualifier hosted by North Central College Thursday.

Gutierrez shaved four-tenths of a second off of his previous record time in the 400-meter hurdles. His 52.80 in the event Thursday ranks 11th nationally in the event. Laun-Smith moved up to second in the nation in the triple jump breaking her own school record with a leap of 12.27 meters (40-3.25).

Both Laun-Smith and Gutierrez should be locks for the NCAA Division III Championships hosted by UW-La Crosse May 24-26. The official list of student-athletes competing in championships will be released Saturday morning.

Aleeshah Heinzen finished sixth in the triple jump registering her season best mark of 11.01 meters (36-1.5). She also posted a distance of 4.81 meters (15-9.5) in the long jump Thursday.

In other events, Fernando Castillo was fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.26, Mauricio Penn crossed the line in 2:00.62, his season-best in the 800, and Scott Fuchs recorded his best throw of the season in the javelin with a distance of 57.47 meters (188-6).
