Laun-Smith Earns MWC Awards

February 24, 2018

First-year Eva Laun-Smith was named Midwest Conference Field Performer of the Meet and received the Newcomer of the Year award after taking gold in three events at the MWC Indoor Championships.

Laun-Smith is the second student-athlete to represent Beloit as the Field Performer of the Meet at the indoor championships in program history. Stephanie Muller received the award in 2000 and 2001.

Laun-Smith led Beloit to a fourth place finish in the championships and wrote her name in the Buccaneer record books in the process.

In her first indoor championships, Laun-Smith stood atop the podium in three events including the long jump, triple jump and 60-meter hurdles. Her three conference titles tie for the most won by a Beloit track and field athlete, male or female, at an indoor championship in program history.

Laun-Smith also writes her name in the women's record book with the second-most career conference titles behind Muller (1998-2001) who earned seven indoor titles in her career.

On Friday, Laun-Smith captured her first conference title in the long jump. Her leap of 18' 3.25" (5.57 meters) broke the school record, which she had set earlier this season, and registered as a top 17 distance in Division III.

Laun-Smith continued her phenomenal first-year campaign Saturday with two golds. In the triple jump, she recorded a distance of 37' 6.50" (11.44 meters) and she set a blistering pace in the 60-meter hurdles crossing the line in 8.99.

Laun-Smith had set the Ripon College facility record in a preliminary heat of the 60 hurdles registering a time of 8.95, a school record and top 15 time in Division III. She also holds a top 15 mark in DIII in the triple jump, which she recorded earlier this season.
