Grinnell, IA -- The Beloit College Indoor Track & Field team had a pretty good first day at the Midwest Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, being held at Grinnell College.
Two athletes earned All-MWC honors and a school record was broken - twice. The Women stand seventh and the Men eighth thru the completion of eight events.
Karen Jones finished third in the 5000m and George Gray was third in the Mile with both earning All-MWC recognition.
Jones broke the Beloit record in her race, shattering Amanda Hammermeister's 2008 mark of 18:30.88 with an 18:17.67 finish. Emma Koenig also broke the previous record with a sixth-place finish in 18:30.57.
Also earning points for the Women were the Sprint Medley Relay of Angie Earley, Rachel Monroe, Nadia Hecker-O'Brien and Ellie Waddle in fourth and the 4x200m Relay of the same foursome in eighth.
For the Men the Sprint Medley Relay of Matt Kreiser, Dewight Walker, Sean Beckford and Simon Kafka was sixth; the 4x400m Relay of Kreiser, Walker, Beckford and Jordan Garcia was seventh; and Alberto Torres finished eighth in the 5000m.
The second and final day of the Championships begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. It's a full day of finals with field events starting the day. The running events begin with the Distance Medley Relay at 12 noon.
