Bucs Top Vikings in Extras for Split

April 19, 2018

The Beloit College softball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth to secure a split with Lawrence University in a twinbill played at Mercyhealth Sportscore Two.

After falling in the first game 9-1 in five innings, the Buccaneers turned the tide in game two. Solid defense backed a fantastic pitching performance by Alyssa Morris and the offense notched timely hits to lead the Bucs to the win.

Lawrence plated the first run in the bottom of the first in game two. It took a few innings but Beloit tallied the equalizer in the top of the fifth. Alyssa Boltik led off the inning with a single and booked it around the bases to tie the game 1-1 on Emily Stapay’s double up the middle in the next at bat.

The Vikings threatened in the bottom of the sixth but Morris and the Buc defense stranded two on the basepaths to keep the game knotted at one.

Ashley Lambert opened the ninth with a single to right field to rally the Bucs but two quick outs by Lawrence added to the drama. The Buccaneers refused to fold and Dani Strejc re-started the offense with a single to center field. Boltik legged out a single to the shortstop and Stapay drew a walk in a great at bat to load the bases. Emily Malarski tagged a shot to left center for a ground-rule double that plated two runs giving Beloit a 3-1 lead.

The Bucs defense was solid behind Morris in the ninth with Boltik registering the first out of the inning on a fly ball to center. After a single to right center, Kat Grzeszkiewicz hushed the Viking fans with a great diving catch on liner up the middle for out number two. Malarski tallied the final out after knocking down a hard liner at the hot corner and making the throw to first.

Morris went the distance allowing just one run in nine innings of work to move to 1-1 on the season.

Up Next: The Bucs are scheduled to travel to Galesburg, Illinois for a doubleheader against Knox Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Beloit will make a pit stop for two more games in Jacksonville against Illinois College Sunday. That twinbill is slated to start at 10 a.m.
