Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team closed their 2017 season on a high note, scoring a sweep of Knox College at the Strong Complex Field, a doubleheader that was scheduled for Janesville before the threat of weather sprung up.
Beloit took game one 11-3 in five innings before coming from behind with a six-run seventh to win game two 9-7.
In the season finale, in which the Bucs played as the visiting team, Beloit scored three times in the top of the first on Erica Stalo's two-run single and Emalie Thern's run-scoring base hit. But the Prairie Fire responded with three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-3 advantage.
That score stood up until the top of the seventh inning when Beloit, down to the last three outs of its season, pushed their six runs across to lead 9-6. Thern, Ashley Lambert, Monica Smith, and Kaity Grzeszkiewicz all singled in runs before Emily Malarski capped the inning with a two-run single. Knox got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning but left the possible tying runs on base.
Alyssa Boltik earned the win in relief, going 5.2 innings, giving up one run and scattering three hits, striking out two. Thern, Lambert and Grzeszkiewicz had two hits each.
In the opener Beloit scored six times in the bottom of the first, added two in the third and three in the fourth to end the game early.
Alex Kohn, Stalo, Tati Rodriguez, Thern and Boltik all had two hits with Kohn, Stalo, Thern and April Apfelbaum all driving in two runs. Boltik got the win, going complete while allowing four hits.
Thern and Apfelbaum both played their final games for the Buccaneers.
