Mt. Vernon, IA -- The Beloit College Softball team made the long trek to Iowa over the weekend for four Midwest Conference games, falling at Grinnell College 5-0 and 16-2 on Saturday and 10-0 and 2-1 at Cornell College Sunday.
In the final game of the trip Sunday at Cornell, the Rams, carrying a 10-game winning streak, scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning but the Buccaneers answered in the fifth when Emily Malarski singled in Kaity Grzeszkiewicz with the tying run. CC then scored what held up as the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth, unearned, and Beloit couldn't respond.
In the opener Sunday Cornell scored twice in the first, second and third and four times in the fourth to end the game early.
Back on Saturday, Grinnell held Beloit hitless until the fifth in the opener while taking a 3-0 lead. April Apfelbaum broke up the no-hit effort with two out in the fifth. Alyssa Boltik also had a single in the sixth. The Pioneers added two runs in the fourth to close the scoring.
In game two GC scored five runs in both the first and fourth and two in the second and third to end things early. Ashley Lambert had two of the Buccaneers' six hits.
Beloit closes out the 2017 season next Saturday at the Janesville Youth Softball Complex with a doubleheader. Action begins at 11:00 a.m.
