Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team had an unexpected home doubleheader Saturday, a pair of games moved from Ripon to Beloit because of the threat of rainy weather, and made the most of it with a split, winning game one 5-2 before falling 4-3 in eight innings in game two.
In the opener the Red Hawks, playing as the home team, scored a run in the first and then held Beloit scoreless for the next two innings. The Bucs got on the board, and grabbed the lead, with two runs in the fourth on Ashley Lambert's two-run single. They added three more in the sixth on Emalie Thern's three-run home run, her first of the season and fourth of her career.
Ripon got one of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth but that was as close as they'd get as winning pitcher Alyssa Boltik shut the door in the seventh.
Boltik gave up eight hits and only one earned run, striking out one and walking two. Thern finished with two hits.
In game two, the Buccaneers jumped in front with two runs in the top of the first with Emily Malarski and Lambert hitting run-scoring singles. That lead held until the fourth and fifth when RC scored once in each inning to tie it up.
Neither team could break the tie heading to extra innings until April Apfelbaum singled in the lead run in the top of the eighth, though the Bucs left the bases loaded. The Red Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with the tying and winning runs scoring on a wild pitch and an error with one out.
Lambert finished with three hits while Malarski had two.
Beloit continues Midwest Conference play on Wednesday with a pair of games at Lake Forest College. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
