Beloit, WI -- After postponing and rescheduling twice because of unfriendly weather, the Beloit College Softball teams' doubleheader with Alverno College was worth the wait.
The teams split the games, with the Buccaneers winning on a walkoff in game one 1-0 and the Inferno scoring twice in the seventh to win game two 5-3.
In the opener, Alyssa Boltik and the Alverno pitcher battled each other nearly pitch for pitch thru six scoreless innings. Boltik faced just 24 batters, three over minimum, while AU's hurler faced just 27, six over. Boltik finished with a four-hitter, striking out four and walking no one.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when, with one out, Kaity Grzeszkiewicz singled just over the pitcher's head and was followed by Boltik's single down the left field line. After pinch-hitter Shania Johnson grounded out to second, moving both runners up a base, Alex Kohn singled into left field to score Grzeszkiewicz with the game-winner.
Emalie Thern had two of the Bucs' six hits.
In game two, Alverno jumped on top with a run in the second but left the bases loaded. Beloit grabbed the lead with a three-run third inning when Madi Christine hit a two-run single and Thern plated the third run of the inning with another base hit. But the Inferno responded with two unearned runs in the fourth to tie it at 3-all.
It remained 3-3 into the seventh when AU pushed across a pair of runs on four hits. The Buccaneers got a runner in scoring position and one out with the tying run at the plate but couldn't break through.
Emily Malarski had two hits for the Bucs in the game.
Beloit has a few days off before hosting a pair of Midwest Conference doubleheaders for the second straight weekend, taking on Illinois College Saturday for Alumni Recognition Day and Monmouth College Sunday for Senior Day. Both days begin at 1:00 p.m.
