Kissimmee, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team fell twice on the first day of the 2016 season, dropping the first game to Baldwin Wallace University 2-1, and falling in the nightcap to Bridgewater College 12-3 on Sunday.
In the season opener, the Bucs gave up two runs off five hits, with both runs scoring in the second inning. The Bucs put a run on the board in the top of the sixth after a two out walk from senior Tala Cornell. Cornell proceeded to steal second and scored off of a throwing error by the third baseman on a bunt by Bethany Stavrakas. Baldwin Wallace pitcher Samantha Dostall frustrated the Bucs' offense, allowing no hits and striking out six.
Senior Mikayla Martin started the season on the mound for the Bucs, striking out two and walking three.
In the nightcap, the Bucs struggled defensively, giving up 13 hits and allowing seven errors. Beloit showed their fight in the bottom of the seventh, stringing together three consecutive two out singles. However, the effort wasn't enough for the Bucs to stage a comeback.
Martin led the team with two hits and a walk. Maddie Terlap, Emalie Thern, and Taurie Burns each had one RBI.
The Bucs are back in action on Monday with a double header, starting with Coe (4-2) at 9:00 am, and then Marietta (2-4) at 11:15 am EST.
