Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team swept a pair of non-conference games Thursday at the Strong Complex Softball Field, topping Alverno College 1-0 in eight innings and 5-4, the wins coming in very different ways.
In the opener neither team could push a run across, though both had chances. Finally in the bottom of the eighth inning Megan Salm led off with a double. After two outs Tala Cornell hit a ball to right center field than alluded both outfielders and rolled to the wall, allowing Salm to come around with the winning run. It's the third walk-off win by the Buccaneers this season, all three at home and two of them off the bat of Cornell.
The game-winning double was Cornell's second hit of the game, half the Buccaneer's total. Jen Zucker went the distance for her tenth win of the season, the first pitcher with 10 wins for Beloit since Dani Meehan went 10-9 in 2006. She struck out seven and walked none while allowing just four hits.
In game two the Inferno jumped on top in the first inning with two runs, one of them unearned, and added a third run in the third inning while Beloit went in order in the first three frames. The Bucs finally got their bats going in the fifth, taking the lead with five runs. Cornell had a run-scoring single; pinch-hitter Emalie Thern a two-run double, and Emily Dorjath a two-run single to highlight the six-hit inning. Alverno pulled back within one in the sixth with an unearned run and had the tying run on third base with two out in the seventh until a strikeout gave the Buccaneers their third sweep of the season.
Salm battled through the seven innings to earn her second win of the season, allowing nine hits while striking out three and walking four.
Beloit returns to Midwest Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Ripon College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
