Janesville, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team finished with a split for the third straight day at the Midwest Conference Softball Classic Sunday, defeating Knox College 11-2 before closing with an 8-0 loss to Cornell College.
Against Knox the Buccaneers scored seven times in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Emily Dorjath got things going with a run-scoring single followed by a two-run double by April Apfelbaum, an RBI single by Megan Salm, an RBI double by Maddie Terlap, and a run-scoring single by Bethany Stavrakas. That was the scoring until the third when Beloit struck for four more runs to make it 11-0. Stavrakas had another RBI single, Dorjath walked with the bases loaded, and Emalie Thern hit a two-run double. The Prairie Fire scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth before the Bucs shut the door for the win.
Jen Zucker earned her ninth win of the season, scattering four hits while striking out 11 and walking one. She struck out the first six batters of the game and eight of the first 10 to earn her third win of the weekend. Stavrakas had three hits while Terlap had two.
In game two the 20-win Rams scored five runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second to go up 6-0. They added two runs in the bottom of five to end the game early.
The Bucs were led by Stavrakas' two hits as she finished the six-game Classic with 14 hits and a .700 batting average (14-20) with six runs scored.
Beloit has a few days off before hosting Alverno College in a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
