Janesville, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team duplicated their results from the opening day of the Midwest Conference Softball Classic with a split of their two Saturday games, defeating Illinois College 4-3 in the first game before falling to Monmouth College 11-1 in game two.
The Buccaneers got the Illinois College game off to a good start, scoring all four of their runs in the top of the opening inning. Mikayla Martin singled in the first two runs, Emily Malarski had an RBI single and Hayley Barnett grounded out to first to score the fourth run of the inning. IC responded with two runs on groundouts in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half and then closed out the game's scoring, and pulled to within one, with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
Jen Zucker took over from that point, allowing just two hits the rest of the way for her eighth win of the season. She struck out seven while walking two. Bethany Stavrakas had two hits in the game.
The Buccaneers again jumped on top against Monmouth College, scoring what-proved-to-be their only run of the game in the top of the first on April Apfelbaum's infield single. The Fighting Scots responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and then tacked on six in the fourth to end the game early.
Tala Cornell had three hits in the game while Stavrakas and Apfelbaum both had two. Stavrakas has had multiple hits in every game of the Classic.
Beloit closes out play in Janesville on Sunday with two more games, playing Knox College at 10:00 a.m. and Cornell College at 12:00 noon.
