Winter Haven, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team dropped a pair of games on the first day of their 2015 season, falling to Washington College Maryland 7-2 in the season opener and Wheaton College Massachusetts 8-1 in game two Sunday.
In the opener the Bucs got behind the eight-ball early, allowing four unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The Shorewomen added a run in the second to make it 5-0 before the Buccaneers got on the board in the fourth when Bethany Stavrakas scored unearned on Megan Salm's single. They added their final run in the sixth on Tala Cornell's run-scoring single, but left the bases loaded. WC added two runs in the sixth to finish the scoring.
Megan Salm recovered from the rough first inning, at one point retiring nine straight. She had a walk and a strikeout. Stavrakas finished with two hits.
In game two the Lyons scored once in the top of one and twice more in the second to jump out. The Bucs scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth on an Emily Dorjath double, scoring Stavrakas, who led off the inning with her third hit of the day. Wheaton tacked on two runs in the sixth to close the scoring.
Jen Zucker pitched the first five innings, striking out four, while Taurie Burns finished up the final two.
The Buccaneers continue play in the Rebel Spring Games on Monday, taking on Washington a second time at 10:00 a.m. ET followed by a game against Catholic University out of Washington D.C. at 12:15 p.m.
