Buccaneers Fight Back But Can't Overcome Slow Start, Scoreless Fourth

April 20, 2016

Rock Island, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team never gave in after a slow start, but the momentum faded in a scoreless fourth quarter of a 17-8 non-conference loss at Augustana College Wednesday night.

After Augustana scored the opening goal three minutes into the first quarter, Dylan Levine tied it up three minutes later.  The Vikings then went on an eight-goal run that extended into the second period for a 9-1 lead with nine minutes left in the half.  Ed Smith (Michael Boyland) ended the run with a man-up goal followed by scores from Mike Spencer and another man-up goal by Tanner James (Nick Meisberger), pulling the Bucs back within 9-4.  AU scored the last two goals of the half to lead 11-4 at the break.

Augie scored the first two goals of the third period before Mike Spencer (man-down) and Luke Bankord matched those scores to keep it a seven-goal deficit.  Augustana stretched the lead with a goal at 5:18 of the quarter before goals by Matt Kelly and James brought Beloit back within 14-8 as the third quarter ended.  But the Vikings shut down the Buccaneer comeback in the fourth quarter while scoring three goals for the final score.

Trevor Kenahan made 20 saves in goal and had four ground balls.  Chris Anderson had a team-best five ground balls while Jack Walter added four with five faceoff wins.  Meisberger and Boyland both had four caused turnovers.

Beloit closes out the regular season on Saturday, August 30, with a Midwest Lacrosse Conference game at Cornell College in Iowa.  Faceoff is at 2:00 p.m.
