Bucs Fall to League-Leading Aurora's Big Second Half

April 16, 2016

Aurora, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team ran into a buzz saw in the second half of their 22-8 loss at Midwest Lacrosse Conference co-leader Aurora University Saturday.

The Spartans, two-time defending league champions, out-scored the Buccaneers 14-3 in the second 30 minutes to break open a close contest.

The teams traded the first four goals of the opening quarter, with Liam O'Connor (Chris Anderson) and Luke Bankord scoring for Beloit.  AU scored late to break the tie and lead 3-2 after one.  That late goal started a three-goal run by Aurora, which was broken up by Mike Spencer's score just past the 11 minute mark.  O'Connor and Matt Kelly (Michael Boyland) scored back-to-back within 20 seconds to pull the Buccaneers back within 6-5 with just over three minutes left in the half.  But the Spartans scored twice in the last 2:40 to lead 8-5 at the break.

The Spartans got plenty of breathing room with their lead in the third period, out-scoring the Bucs 9-1 to take a 17-6 advantage into the fourth.  Jake Wallace scored the lone Beloit goal of the third period.  Dylan Levine and Kelly (O'Connor) scored within the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to get the Buccaneers back within 18-8 but that was as close as they'd get as Aurora scored the final four.

Trevor Kenahan set a Beloit single-game record with 25 saves, eclipsing the previous mark of 24 by himself as a freshman and by John Murphy earlier this season at Carthage.  Wallace had a team-high eight ground balls while Anderson had five.  Anderson also had four caused turnovers.

The Buccaneers play a non-conference game at Augustana College Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
