Bucs Can't Overcome First Quarter Deficit in Senior Day Setback

March 26, 2016

Beloit, WI -- On an historic day in Beloit College Men's Lacrosse history, a first-quarter deficit was too much for the Bucs to overcome in a 23-12 loss at Strong Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Six seniors were recognized in pre-game ceremonies as the first-ever Men's Lacrosse Senior Day was held.  Fourth-year players Trevor Kenahan, Jace Hodder, Nick Yielding, Liam O'Connor, Tyler Jackson and Aiden Whinnery, along with their parents, received applause from the crowd as they were brought to midfield.

In the game, CUW scored the first five goals of the game before Zach Carner and Michael Boyland (Luke Bankord) scored back-to-back to cut into the deficit.  The Falcons scored twice more in the final 1:15 to lead 7-2 after one.  Concordia moved their lead to 10-2 with the first three goals of the second quarter before Mark Gannon stopped the run.  The teams traded goals for the final 7:10, with Mike Spencer, Boyland (O'Connor), and Boyland making it 13-6 at the break.

Bankord and Nick Meisberger scored the first two goals of the third period for Beloit before CUW scored four unanswered to close out the quarter with a 17-8 lead.  The Falcons scored five straight to open the fourth quarter, making their run nine straight, before Bankord and Matt Kelly (Boyland) stopped the run with consecutive scores.  Concordia scored their final goal at the 9:08 mark before Boyland (Gannon) and Kelly (Carner) closed out the scoring in the final 2:51.

John Murphy made 13 saves in goal playing the first 47 minutes before Kenahan finished up with one save.  O'Connor and Chris Anderson had five ground balls each while Kelly had four.  Jake Wallace recorded eight caused turnovers, breaking his own single-game record of five.

The Buccaneers have a week before taking on Depauw University at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox, Illinois, next Saturday.  Faceoff is at 3:00 p.m.
