Bucs Go Cold in 2nd Half of Home Defeat

March 16, 2016

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team was on a hot streak in the second period but cooled off after halftime in an 11-10 loss to Elmhurst College at Strong Stadium Wednesday night.

The teams were even after one quarter at 3-3.  Michael Boyland opened the scoring just over two minutes in before the Bluejays scored back-to-back to grab the lead.  Boyland re-tied it (Liam O'Connor) at 8:21 but Elmhurst re-took the lead with 6:09 left.  Boyland finished the period with his third goal at 2:56 to even it back up.

The Buccaneers took control in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals - from Boyland, Zach Carner, Boyland for the fifth time (Ed Smith) and Mark Gannon (Jake Wallace) - to take a 7-3 lead before EC stopped the run with 5:03 left in the half.  Gannon and Matt Kelly scored two minutes apart to make it 9-4 before the Bluejays closed the half at the buzzer to make 9-5 through the first 30 minutes.

That last-second goal to end the half started a seven-goal run by Elmhurst that stretched to the 5:43 mark of the fourth quarter, establishing an 11-9 advantage.  Kelly (Wallace) ended the run with 2:09 remaining, the only Beloit score of the second half, but the Buccaneers couldn't get the equalizer as EC effectively ran out the final two minutes.

John Murphy made 10 saves in goal.  Wallace finished with nine ground balls in the game while Chris Anderson had five.  Jack Walter won nine of his 12 faceoffs.

The Buccaneers have a couple of days before they play their first Midwest Lacrosse Conference game of the season Saturday against Benedictine University.  Action at the Stadium begins at 1:00 p.m.
