Buccaneers Play Even in 2nd Half but Fall at Ohio Northern

Ada, OH -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team played even with Ohio Northern University in the second half but couldn't overcome a first half deficit in an 18-11 loss Saturday.

After ONU scored the first goal of the game Matt Kelly (Liam O'Connor) and Luke Bankord put the Bucs on top at the 9:02 mark of the first period.  But the Polar Bears responded with six unanswered scores to close the quarter with a 7-2 advantage.  Ohio Northern made it 8-2 with the first goal of the second before Mike Spencer stopped the seven-goal run.  After ONU tallied again Mark Gannon hit the back of the net to make it 9-4.  The Polar Bears then scored twice to end the half with an 11-4 advantage.

Ohio Northern made it 13-4 with two goals out of the lockerroom before Michael Boyland got in the scoring column.  After ONU made it 14-5 Bankord scored for the second time in the game to send the Buccaneers to the fourth period down 14-6.  The Polar Bears scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to make it 18-4 before Beloit started a five-goal, game-ending run at the 7:19 mark.  O'Connor had the first two goals of the run, the first assisted by Jake Wallace and the second by Gannon, before Gannon made it three straight.  Boyland scored his second of the game and Gannon closed the scoring with his third.

Trevor Kenahan played the first half in goal with no saves before John Murphy played the second half, recording 12 saves.  Luke Thomson had eight ground balls and six caused turnovers while Boyland added six ground balls.

The Buccaneers return to Strong Stadium Wednesday when they host Elmhurst College in a 5:00 p.m. game.
