Lisle, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team made a late run on Saturday but it was stopped short in a 14-8 Midwest Lacrosse Conference loss at league-leading Benedictine University.
The Eagles started fast with the first three goals of the game. The Bucs got on the board midway through the opening quarter on Aidan Whinnery's goal (Zach Carner). After BU struck two minutes later Whinnery scored his second goal, unassisted. Benedictine closed the quarter with a goal inside the final minute to lead 5-2 after one.
Benedictine increased their lead to 7-2 with the first two goals of the second period - in a 51-second span - before Whinnery scored number three. BU closed the half with a goal with three seconds left to lead 8-3 at the break.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter, with Whinnery scoring at 12:29 (Liam O'Connor) and the Eagles at 5:40 to make it 9-4 entering the fourth.
Benedictine scored twice in the first three minutes of the fourth period to move up 11-4 before the Buccaneers put together a four-goal run to pull back within 11-8 with just over seven minutes left. Whinnery started the run (Carner) at 11:47 followed by Grant Oie (Whinnery) and back-to-back scores from Mike Spencer, both assisted by Carner. But the Eagles regained control with the final three goals of the game in the last 3:52 for the win.
John Murphy made six saves in the first half while Trevor Kenahan made eight in the second 30 minutes.
Beloit is off until traveling to Augustana College on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
