Rams End Bucs' Win Streak in Shootout

February 13, 2018

Mount Vernon, Iowa -- The Men's Basketball team traveled to Mount Vernon, Iowa Tuesday night riding a season high 3-game win streak to take on Cornell College, but the Rams shot over 55% for the game, putting up their third highest scoring total of the season, to take down the Bucs by a final score of 76-89.

Cornell jumped out to a quick 10-point lead (5-15) six minutes into the contest before the Bucs settled down and began to fight back. After first-year guard Andrew Walters (’21 Denver, Colo.) cut the lead to single digits (11-19) with 11:12 left in the 1st half, #21 Cody Risseeuw (’18, Clinton, Wis.) drilled a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it a 5-point game, forcing a Rams’ timeout to regroup.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, a late run by the Rams to end the half gave the home team a 13-point advantage (31-44) heading into the locker room.

Recently named the conference player-of-the-week, Sophomore Tristan Shoup (’20 Fort Atkinson, Wis.) continued to shine offensively, leading the Bucs with 10 points and 6 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Shoup would go on to post 23 points for the game to lead the team.

The second half was all offense for both teams, as they combined to put up 90 total points (45-45) in the final frame. Despite shooting 52% (17-33) from the field in the 2nd, the Bucs were unable to gain any ground on the Rams, who responded to each run by shooting 54% (15-28) themselves.

With 2:54 left to play, #13 Nathaniel Shead (’21 Plano, Ill.) hit his second 3-pointer of the game to bring the Bucs within 7 (74-81), but that’s as close as the Bucs would get before eventually falling by the final margin of 13.

Shead and Risseeuw joined Shoup in double-figures, posting 19 and 22 points respectively. Notably, Cody Risseeuw hit six 3-pointers in the game, a season high for the senior from Clinton.

The Bucs (5-19, 4-13) conclude their season this Saturday, when they take on St. Norbert College at Flood Arena. Tip-off is at 1:00pm.
