Monmouth, Ill. – The Men’s Basketball Team travelled to Illinois Saturday to take on the Fighting Scots of Monmouth College at Glennie Gymnasium, but a 51-point 2nd half helped the Scots get past the Bucs by a final score of 62-86.
After an early run gave the Scots a 6-point lead (2-8), the Bucs responded with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game at 8 on a layup from #5 Tristan Shoup (’20 Fort Atkinson, Wis.). Sophomore Mason Jones (’20 Santa Maria, Calif.) tied the game again (16-16) with his 3-point play at the 8:39 mark of the 1st half, and the Bucs never trailed by more the 8 points they were down at halftime.
Unfortunately, the Scots offense erupted in the 2nd half to score 51 points on 51% shooting (19-37), which doomed the Bucs’ hopes of keeping things close. This overshadowed an impressive, offensive effort from the Bucs as well, who managed 35 points of their own on 47% shooting (14-30) in the final 20 minutes.
Shoup finished with a double-double on 22 points and 11 rebounds. First-year Andrew Walters (’21 Denver, Colo.) helped out with 6 points and 6 rebounds of his own on an efficient 3-4 shooting.
The Bucs play their final game of the month on Tuesday, January 30th when they take on the Foresters of Lake Forest College. Tip-off is at 5:30pm.
