Beloit, Wis. – The Men’s Basketball Team knocked down twelve 3’s Wednesday night in an entertaining contest at Flood Arena, but their success from beyond the arc wasn’t enough to overcome the Red Hawks of Ripon College, as they eventually fell by a final score of 71-80.
Both teams came out to compete early with 4 ties and 4 lead changes between the two in the first 6 minutes of action. #5 Tristan Shoup (’20 Fort Atkinson, Wis.) tied the game at 11 with 14:26 in the 1st before the Red Hawks, who shot 67% (16-24) in the first half, regained the lead for the remainder of the half. Shoup went on to post a near double-double, with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
The Bucs allowed the visiting Red Hawks to stretch their lead to as high as 14 points (37-51) before their 3-point barrage sparked a comeback in the 2nd half. Sophomore Darin Empereur (’20 Janesville, Wis.) hit a shot from beyond the arc at the 14:33 mark to begin a stretch of eight 3’s in the final 14 minutes of play for the Bucs. Most of the damage from downtown was done by #13 Nathaniel Shead (’21 Plano, Ill) and #21 Cody Risseeuw (’18 Clinton, Wis.), who combined to hit nine 3-pointers. Risseeuw’s fourth 3-pointer of the half cut the Red Hawks’ lead to 2 (49-51) with 11:53 to play, but this was as close as the Bucs would get in their effort to comeback.
Risseeuw and Shead finished with 19 points apiece to lead the Bucs. The 19 points was a career high for first-year guard out of Illinois.
The Bucs (2-16, 1-10) return to action this Saturday at Glennie Gymnasium, when they take on the Fighting Scots of Monmouth College. Tip-off is at 1:00pm.
