Late Push Not Enough in Bucs’ 54-63 Loss

January 20, 2018

Appleton, Wis. – The Men’s Basketball team fell behind early against Lawrence University Saturday afternoon in Appleton, Wisconsin, but clawed their way back to take a brief lead in the 2nd half before falling to the Vikings late 54-63.

The Bucs took an early lead off of a Mason Jones (’20 Santa Maria, Calif.) 3-pointer at the 17:01 mark (8-6), and the teams continued to trade baskets until a layup from #5 Tristan Shoup (’20 Fort Atkinson, Wis.) with 8:18 left put the Bucs ahead 22-21. This was the last time the Bucs would lead in the half, as the Vikings finished with a run to take a 39-31 lead into the locker room.

Lawrence continued to hold the advantage in the 2nd half, with their lead as high as 13 until Beloit began to come back. After back-to-back 3's by First-year Mike Kayira ('21 Houston, Tex.), the Bucs took their first lead of the 2nd half (57-55) when #3 Darin Empereur ('19 Janesville, Wis.) drained another shot from beyond the arc with 7:55 left in the game. This was the last time the Bucs would lead, though, as the Vikings regained control down the stretch.

Shoup and #21 Cody Risseeuw ('18 Clinton, Wis.) led the Bucs in scoring, chipping in 12 points apiece in the contest.

The Bucs (2-15, 1-9) have the rest of the weekend off, and return to Flood Arena Wednesday, January 24th to take on the Red Hawks of Ripon College. Tip-off is at 5:30pm.
