Bucs Split Home MWC Weekend Games

January 14, 2017

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team had mixed results in a pair of home Midwest Conference games over the weekend, winning on Friday night against Knox 73-71 in overtime before seeing their modest win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in a 111-92 loss to Grinnell College.

Saturday, the three-point happy Pioneers used a late first half 10-0 run to head to the lockerroom up 54-44.  The lead held around that margin for much of the second half, with Beloit closing within 90-84 with 5:29 remaining on a 6-0 run.  But Grinnell answered that run with a 16-4 run of their own over the next four minutes, making three three-pointers and eight free throws to secure the win.

Beloit finished at 60.7% shooting (34-56) for the game and 24-36 free throws but that couldn't overcome 18 three-pointers by GC, though they shot just 47% (39-83).

Five Buccaneers finished in double figures, led by Sam Noyce with a career-best 15 points.  Andrew Bremner and Jacob Manthe both scored 14 while Tristan Shoup added 12 and Carlton Henning 11.  Bremner and Shoup both had double-doubles with 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively, and Bremner also dished out five assists.

On Friday night the Buccaneers got the game-winning layup by Bremner with three seconds left in overtime to get their second straight victory.

The teams played an even first half, which ended in a 32-all tie when Bremner scored with 51 seconds left.  The Prairie Fire put together a quick 5-0 run early in the second half to jump up 43-35 and held on to that lead until a late 12-4 Beloit run put them up 60-59 with 1:55 remaining on a Cody Risseeuw three-pointer.  But KC hit a three with 38 seconds left and neither team could score the rest of the way, sending the contest to OT tied at 62.  There were two ties and two lead changes in the extra period until Bremner's late driving layin decided the outcome, giving them two straight wins for the first time since the season's opening two games.

In one of their toughest shooting nights of the season, Beloit shot just 38.8% (26-67) from the field while Knox shot an even 50% (30-60).  The Bucs won the rebound battle 39-34 and committed just 12 turnovers.

Risseeuw finished with 19 points while Shoup had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Bremner and Mason Jones both added 11 points.

Beloit travels to Cornell College on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. MWC game before returning to Flood Arena next Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. game with Lawrence University.
