Bucs Can't Overcome Early Ice Cold Shooting in Close Loss

December 15, 2016

Beloit, WI -- The -20 wind chill outside somehow snuck into Flood Arena on Thursday night, affecting the Beloit College Men's Basketball team's shooting.  Once they got a little hotter the deficit was too much to overcome in an 84-80 loss to Rockford University.

The Regents came out of the gate firing away, scoring the first six points before Sam Noyce got Beloit on the board with a jumper 2:30 into the game.  RU built their lead as high as 12 with 12:22 left in the first half but a 7-0 Buccaneer run over the next two-plus minutes got the Bucs back within 23-18 with 9:52 left.  Rockford kept their advantage at a comfortable distance until Beloit pulled with four several times in the last four minutes.  The Regents led 40-36 at the break.

The Buccaneers pulled within two nine seconds into the second half on a layin by Cody Risseeuw before Rockford slowly added to their lead, moving up by double figures at 14:35 and by their largest of the game, 15, with 9:24 left.  RU still led 73-62 with 3:59 remaining before the Bucs put together a 12-3 run that got them back within 76-74 with just over a minute left.  11 points by Risseeuw, including three three-pointers, and a three by Mile Gulve still had Beloit within two with 10 seconds left.  But that was as close as they could get as RU iced the game with a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining.

The Bucs finished at 45.1% (32-71) for the game, including just 9-24 three-pointers and making 7-13 free throws, while the Regents shot 52.4% (33-63) from the field, 53.1% (17-32) in the second half, and hit on 12-15 free throws.

Risseeuw led the way with 21 points with four three-pointers while Noyce, Gulve and Andrew Bremner all scored 11.  Bremner also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Gulve dished out three assists.

Beloit has little time to shake off the loss, hosting Buena Vista University on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., their final game of 2016.
