Buccaneers Can't Overcome Late First Half Spurt in MWC Home Loss

December 7, 2016

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team was keeping within striking distance of undefeated Ripon College until three three-pointers in the final 1:32 of the opening half led to a 79-67 Midwest Conference loss on Wednesday night in Flood Arena.

The teams played a tight game for the better part of the first 20 minutes, which included two ties and nine lead changes.  But with the Bucs down 31-24 with 1:54 left in the half after a pair of Mason Jones free throws, Ripon hit the three treys and headed to the lockerroom with a 40-29 advantage.

That late Red Hawk spurt kept expanding in the second half as RC came out of halftime on a 15-4 run to grab their largest lead of the game at 55-33 with 14:49 left.  The Bucs got back within nine points at 66-57 with 7:10 remaining on an Andy Lutz layin but that was as close as they could get down the stretch.

Beloit shot just 41% (25-61) for the game, though they did hit 10 three-pointers, tying the fourth-highest single game total in program history.  RC shot 51.9% (28-54) for the game and hit 15-17 free throws.

Cody Risseeuw had 19 points and four assists while Darin Empereur had a career-best 14 points, also with four assists, including four-three's.  Andy Lutz added nine points, his first points as a Buccaneer, while Andrew Bremner scored eight with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Buccaneers have some time off for finals before hosting stateline-rival Rockford University on Thursday, December 15, in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
