Monmouth, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team saw their comeback fall flat at Monmouth College on Saturday afternoon in a 79-64 loss, that after dropping a typically frenetic 122-110 game at Grinnell College on Friday night.
Saturday, Monmouth closed the first half on a 10-4 run that made a six-point game into a 42-30 game at the break. The deficit grew to 15 early in the second half until the Buccaneers pulled back within five after an extended 23-13 run. But the Fighting Scots responded with a 14-2 run that effectively decided the contest with three minutes remaining.
Beloit finished at 45% (23-51) from the field for the game, 44% (11-25) in the second half, while MC ended at 52% (28-54) for the game, 54% (14-26) in the second half.
Cody Risseeuw was the lone Buccaneer in double figures with 28 points, also dishing out four assists. Tristan Shoup added nine points along with a team-high eight rebounds.
In Grinnell Friday night, the Buccaneers trailed 63-62 at the half after shooting 58.7% (27-46). The game stayed close until the final four minutes, when the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to push their lead into double figures with 3:09 remaining.
The Bucs finished shooting 54.9% (45-82) for the game while GC was at 47.7% (42-88), including making 17-52 three-pointers.
Risseeuw and Shoup led the way with career-highs, both scoring 28, with Shoup hitting 12-15 shots. Risseeuw also had 10 assists while Shoup grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Andrew Bremner stuffed the scoresheet with 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, making 10-13 shots.
Beloit returns to Flood Arena on Wednesday night when they host Ripon College at 7:30 p.m., the first of four straight home games over the next month.
